Meet the Cast: Professor Moriarty

Charles1aCharles Lathrop is not a new comer to RCLT stage, however, it has been some time since we’ve seen him here! We are glad he’s decided to come back, he’s quite talented!!

We are glad to talk to you today! Tell us about your character, Professor Moriarty.

Moriarty is a criminal mastermind.  He strikes me as being somewhat fatalistic, taking more interest in the game itself than actually winning per-say.  While he might consider it acceptable to be defeated by a worthy opponent he considers being arrested a detestable ignominious result.  In other words, the police and the courts are beneath him.  If he’s ever beaten it would really be Sherlock who did it and therefore Moriarty doesn’t see any reason that anyone else should have any claim to it.  Moriarty surrounds himself with those who are easily cowed, overawed, or manipulated.  As a down side, his henchmen are not always reliable.

What challenges have you faced portraying this role?
In portraying this role I’ve probably found Moriarty’s apparent lack of initiative the most disconcerting.  While everything is perfectly acceptable and entertaining for a play, if we’re being realistic he really could be doing many more things to disrupt and attack Sherlock which he simply doesn’t do.  Really, I run the risk of giving it too much thought.
What do you hope audiences will take away from this production?
I don’t know.  For my own part at least I want the audience to get who Moriarty is and what he’s about.
